T20 Global League 2017 Draft

T20 Global League 2017 draft happened on Sunday, August 27. One South African cricketer and one international cricketer already allocated for each of the franchises. This draft was basically to fill 16 other spots which was left. The main player draft happened where we saw 16 players being picked per squad over 16 rounds. After the draft ceremony was over we witnessed as many as 32 international and 96 local cricketers being picked by various franchises for the inaugural season.

Each of the franchise owners was asked to make their specific pick during the live event with some conditions attached to it. The first 3 players chosen by each franchise should be South Africans. There were many awesome and game-changing draws in the draft ceremony. A very experienced pace bowler Dale Steyn is going to play for Cape Town Knight Riders for Mr Shahrukh Khan. The Durban Qalandars got the first pick and they picked Chris Morris who was absolutely magnificent in IPL this year. It was followed by Protea bowler Dane Paterson being picked by Bloem City Blazers and many others.

Akhona Mnyaka is the youngest player to be picked by any team. He is just 18 years old but very talented. Basically, he played for SA Schools and is from Hudson Park in East London. He is going to be play for the Bloemfontein City Blazers. It was a big risk taken by this team which may or may not work out. However if Akhona manages to put on a great performance, he can be in the international team very soon. It might just be a game changer for this guy.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India hasn't allowed any Indian player to play in the T20 Global League 2017. Cricket South Africa CEO Haroon Lorgat addressed this matter as well. He said “We did speak to BCCI about Indian cricketers playing in the SA league. But they have their own policy of not allowing their cricketers play in other leagues other than IPL. We also did notdesign T20 Global League keeping them in mind but yes it would have been wonderful if Indians could be part of the South African league. The fans would have seen top cricketers converging at one stage apart from IPL.”

Lorgat also seemed very optimistic regarding the T20 Global League 2017. Everybody knows how much the IPL has affected the Indian team and uplifted it. Most of the stars in Indian team right now have emerged from the Indian Premier League itself. Lorgat hence believes that the T20 global league 2017 is going to be and upliftment to South Africa in terms of cricket, as well. Let's see if South Africa can produce new stars in the inaugural edition itself.
